Grade 4-7–The final volume of the series hits the ground running as Miles Wednesday is robbed of the rare and powerful Tiger’s Egg by the Great Cortado and his buffoonish sidekick. Accompanied by his friend Little and the blind explorer Baltinglass of Araby, Miles races the villains to the home of Nura, his mother’s twin sister, who may know the secret of unlocking the Egg’s power. The rousing pursuit sends the 12-year-old sailing on fantastic airships, trekking across desert sands, and even into the Realm of Angels, where he must defend himself against the Sleep Angels and the death sentence they have passed on him. The various plot threads and colorful characters from The Palace of Laughter (2006) and The Tiger’s Egg (2007, both HarperCollins) are pulled together for a grand, albeit chaotic, finish. The final chapters are especially hectic, as Berkeley races to make sure all the loose ends are tied up. The journey there is a fine one, however, filled with the evocative description and engrossing narrative style that have typified the series, and the conclusion is on the whole satisfying.–Christi Esterle, Parker Library, CO

Julie Andrews

Julie Andrews is one of the most recognized and beloved figures in the entertainment industry. Her legendary career encompasses the Broadway and London stages, blockbuster Hollywood films, award-winning television shows, multiple album releases and concert tours and the world of children’s publishing.

A child star of the British vaudeville circuit, Ms. Andrews came to America at the age of 19 to star in The Boyfriend on Broadway. She subsequently received critical acclaim for her legendary stage performances in My Fair Lady, Camelot and Victor/Victoria. Her many memorable film performances include Mary Poppins (which won her an Oscar for her very first motion picture appearance), The Sound of Music (the highest grossing film of all time), Thoroughly Modern Millie, 10, Victor/Victoria and more recently The Princess Diaries and Shrek films.

She is equally well-represented on television – her weekly variety series “The Julie Andrews Hour” won multiple Emmy Awards during its run in the 1970’s. Other notable small-screen appearances include the televised version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, several award-winning variety specials (including three with Carol Burnett), “Eloise at the Plaza” for Disney and ABC, and the CBS television network special live theatre presentation of “On Golden Pond” with Christopher Plummer.

Andrews’ dedication to children has been steadfast throughout her career. She began writing books for young readers over thirty-five years ago and her first two novels – MANDY and THE LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT WHANGDOODLES -remain in print and in high demand. Her other books include the LITTLE BO series, and an additional 15 picture books, novels and Early Readers co-authored with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, including the best-selling DUMPY THE DUMP TRUCK series and the recently released THE GREAT AMERICAN MOUSICAL. Together the best-selling mother-daughter team head-up “The Julie Andrews Collection” imprint at HarperCollins Publishers, dedicated to publishing quality children’s books which “nurture the imagination and cultivate a sense of wonder.”

Andrews considerable charitable work has been consistent throughout her career, and in 2000 the title of Dame Julie Andrews was bestowed upon her by Queen Elizabeth II for lifetime achievements in the arts and humanities. Her many other honors include being named “One of the 100 Greatest Britons” by the British Broadcasting Corporation, serving as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and a prestigious Kennedy Center honor in the fall of 2001. She is married to film director Blake Edwards and they have five children,seven grandchildren,and two great-grandchildren.

“How can I get my child to turn off the Gameboy (TV, computer etc.) and pick up a book?!”

Whether on a book tour with her mother and co-author, the legendary actress Julie Andrews, at speaking engagements in schools, libraries and other public arenas, or in casual conversation, this question surfaces again and again, with increasing urgency, from parents, grandparents, educators, librarians and caregivers across the country.

In fact, eighty-two percent of parents wish their kids read more, according to Scholastic’s annual “Kids and Family Reading” report. PreSchool-Grade 4-This gentle song is sung by Art Garfunkel on an accompanying CD. It is a celebration of the beauty of the seasons, the wonder of nature, and the meaning of faith. Hakkarainen’s soft-focused, luminous illustrations grace each page. Some of the words and ideas are challenging for a young audience; for example, “In a world that can bring pain,/I will still take each chance-/For I believe that whatever the terrain/Our feet can learn to dance.” The concept of faith is stressed here, with the reference to believing “in a hand you cannot see.” Nevertheless, go ahead, learn the song, and by all means, sing it from the heart.
